Learn two-step method of CPR to save lives Marilynn Ann Yates, McClatchy Newspapers "Anyone can learn CPR -- and everyone should!" proclaims the American Heart Association on its website. Because 70 percent of Americans do not know how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), the American Heart Association is encouraging everyone to learn Hands-Only CPR during the first week of June, National CPR and AED Awareness Week. We chatted with representatives from the AHA recently to find out more about what to do if we ever witnessed someone collapse and go into sudden cardiac arrest. Hands-Only CPR is performed with chest compressions but without the mouth-to-mouth breathing done in conventional CPR. In recent years, the American Heart Association has simplified the procedure to two steps. When you see an adult suddenly collapse who is not breathing normally: 1. Call 9-1-1 2. Push hard and fast in the center of the chest at the rate of 100 pumps per minute (like the beat of the Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive" song) Begin CPR as soon as possible after the sudden cardiac arrest because the risk of permanent damage to the victim is greater after four minutes. Continue CPR until an automated external defibrillator (AED) or emergency worker arrives. Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of Americans. And more than 1,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur every day in the U.S., says Dr. Sreenivas Gudimetla, president of the board of directors for the Tarrant County American Heart Association. More than 80 percent of those cardiac arrests happen at home, so the most likely person you will give CPR to is someone you love, says Gudimetla, who is also a cardiologist at Texas Health Harris Methodist Fort Worth Hospital. Most people worry that they might do something wrong helping an adult who has a sudden cardiac arrest, so only 32 percent of victims get CPR from a bystander, which leads to unnecessary deaths. Learning Hands-Only CPR gives people the confidence to act quickly to help a loved one or a stranger in an emergency and increase their survival rates, the AHA says. If more people learn CPR, the chance that someone can help an adult who suddenly collapses increases. Kathryn Bashaw, communications director for the American Heart Association in Tarrant County, Texas, says the AHA is asking Texas legislators to consider CPR training as a high school graduation requirement so our next generation will be prepared to save even more lives. Only 5.2 percent of people who have a cardiac arrest outside of a hospital survive, says the AHA. That number increases to 8 percent when mouth-to-mouth CPR is given. But when a person administers Hands-Only CPR, the victim's chance of survival doubles, Gudimetla says. Hands-Only CPR with just chest compressions is as effective as CPR with breaths in helping adult victims of cardiac arrest, says the American Heart Association. And the two-step method is easier to remember than the traditional method of chest compressions combined with breathing. People hesitant to give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to strangers are more likely to administer just chest compressions. Gudimetla says our breaths contain carbon dioxide when we exhale, which is not as beneficial to the victim as chest compressions. When an adult in sudden cardiac arrest collapses, his lungs and blood still contain oxygen. Chest compressions help to pump this oxygenated blood to the brain and the heart. So the best thing a bystander can do for a cardiac arrest victim is to give high-quality chest compressions with minimal interruptions until medical services personnel arrive. Always remember to get treatment ASAP if you have unusual symptoms! 

The most common symptoms include difficulty in speech, lack of body coordination, difficulty in general body movement, temporary or permanent paralysis on the left or right side of the brain which cause paralysis on the right and left side respectively, uncontrolled movement of the eyes and breathing difficulties that can trigger a coma. (My dad had uncontrolled vomiting also.)

• Numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg especially on one side of the body
• Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding language
• Sudden trouble seeing with one or both eyes
• Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
• Sudden, severe headache with no known cause

 “It is important that the public and healthcare professionals know all of the symptoms of a stroke and are aware that some brain stem strokes heave distinct symptom,” Dr. Bernstein says. “Patients need to receive treatment as soon as possible to promote the best recovery.”

Like all strokes, brain stem strokes produce a wide spectrum of deficits and recovery. Whether a survivor has minor or severe deficits depends on the location of the stroke within the brain stem, the extent of injury and how quickly treatment is provided.
 Brain stem stroke is highly dangerous and can kill if left untreated immediately because the stroke interferes with the flow of oxygenated blood that is essential in the purification of the blood and in getting rid of harmful body toxins.
Risk factors for brain stem stroke are the same as for strokes in other areas of the brain: high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, atrial fibrillation and smoking. Like strokes in other areas of the brain, brain stem strokes can be caused by a clot or a hemorrhage. There are also rare causes, like injury to an artery due to sudden head or neck movements.  (Dad had a car accident a week before this stroke)

 

My Uncle has brain cancer terminal, Life is fragile at times

I guess you could say we are strong people in the many things that life throws at us and then you hear the fragility of life when you can not do anything to help someone that is told they have terminal brain cancer, stage 4 and it all came as a shock and you step back a little to see life at it's fragile, precious self. He is being at peace with the drs giving him weeks to live as they take a step on chemo and radiation at the nearest center we have 30 miles away.  He is young in the late 60's and my aunt and uncle have been supportive of me in helping when I needed it, and my dad is close to him.  We can pray for the peace of not being in pain and the support they need, and to be grateful for life--through the strength and the fragileness!

Hello everyone.
Tyler is ok for now he’s having jaw pain and leg pain and his chest hurts him his face is still swallow and looks like it has a egg sitting own it, also has a open wound that has not closed up completely . Dr Rodriguez’s was called and he said he thinks he’s ok. It Seems like Tyler will have to learn to live with pain. Tyler’s next appointment is January 26th in Maryland and Dr Rodriguez’s will decide what is next for Tyler, and when we will be doing the bone transplant. Tyler’s Dad Richie still not too happy about that but says he will do it [he’s afraid]. Dr Rodriguez said that the plastic will have to come out of Tyler’s jaw it was just put in for a temporary fix. I still love and trust Dr Rodriguez’s and his teams so much he’s a wonderful Dr and will never give up on Tyler. The next surgery is going to be a scary one, and Tyler’s face doesn’t look the same anymore. He still has the two big places where he lost his hair this worries him. Just imagine if this was your child I will never give up on getting Tyler help even if I have to stand out holding on a jar for donations. God must have some great plans for this child. Even if you cannot donate you can keep praying for Tyler he still loves the mail that is sent to him.
Jayden is still sick and throwing up. I wish they would find out what’s wrong with him. Ethan is OK and Nathan is doing good Nathan loves school. Tyler’s teacher still coming to the house, and said Tyler is doing well in his school work. Tyler loves Mrs. bright who is also Nathans k4 teacher. Tyler’s sitting around playing his games he got for Christmas. God has been so good to us and sends his angels to help Tyler and our family may god bless each and every one of you.
The Little Rebel restaurant has told us that they will do a cruise -in in April to help Tyler. Mrs. Leeann Shelton will be arranging it. She’s so Sweet and loves Tyler so much if there’s any of the churches in Greenville or anywhere that would do a benefit for Tyler of some kind that would be so great. Just get in touch with us at

In memory of murder suicides and those left behind

In Memory of the recent murder suicides across the country--Desparate times, prayers for those left behind..(I know this is only a part of the compilation of tragedies)

  It is shocking these days to see in the news so many murder/suicides happening and seeing the downward spiral of people's lives spin out of control; a saddening measure in our country where our neighbors could be in such inner turmoil and we not even notice it.  Those left behind to question the why's of these situations and the hurt that follows for years to come.

  As a Christian it hurts me so to see as in one suicide note said: "please pray for my soul" and to know that by that time it is to late for the soul when the end has come.  That as followers of Christ we are to keep vigilant in the spreading of Jesus in these hours when people are willing to take their lives so easily.  

 OHIO--Jan. 10, 2012, 4 people :  Paul Gilkey was upset that relatives had given his wife tea and toast after he had already peeled an orange for her.

 The dispute over food set Gilkey off, and that during an argument he retrieved a handgun from his bedroom, then killed his own son and two of his wife’s sisters Monday afternoon.

 Gilkey’s wife, 59-year-old Darlene Gilkey, witnessed the shootings from a hospital bed in the living room but wasn’t hurt. She is dying from cancer.

ARKANSAS--Jan. 10, 2012, 2 people: 

"An Arkansas woman who adopted her granddaughter after her son's death in Iraq stabbed the 7-year-old girl in the chest and then set fire to their home in an apparent murder-suicide, authorities said Monday.
Janice Robbins, 63, left a suicide note in her pickup truck before killing her granddaughter, Abby Robbins, and herself on Saturday, Faulkner County sheriff's spokesman Maj. Andy Shock said. In the note, she wrote that she didn't want to leave the girl behind."
  
Abby's father, Army Staff Sgt. William T. "Terry" Robbins, was shot and killed by a fellow soldier in Iraq in 2005 during a dispute over alcohol.
Sometime after his death, Janice Robbins adopted Abby, with the process becoming final in 2010.
 In her suicide note, Robbins begged, "Please pray for my soul."

Samuel Friedlander was faced with the realization that he and his wife would be headed through a divorce and decided that it was not going to happen for him. On Wednesday Debbie Bernstein,the business partner to Samuel’s wife Amy,called police when she had not heard from her since Tuesday. When the police arrived they found  the Friedlander children,10 and 8,shot in their beds with their mom, Amy, bludgeoned to death. Samuel was in the basement where he took his life.

Grandparent had custody
62-year-old William Ahrold and his son, Jackson Ahrold, were found in a van over the weekend. The Ahrolds were reported missing by the Denver Police Department on Dec. 13 and were last seen on Dec. 9.
Grand County Coroner Brenda Bock said Jackson Ahrold died from two gunshot wounds is his back. William Ahrold died from a single gunshot wound to his head. Bock said that the boy was autistic.

A 32-year-old Colorado Springs man was fatally shot in an apparent murder-suicide Wednesday evening in Dixon, Mo.
Dixon City Marshal Cliffty Yoakum said town resident Gary Ball, 30, shot Theron Parlin, a construction contractor from Colorado Springs, 17 times in the face before reloading his 9mm Glock pistol and turning the gun on himself.

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Colorado Springs Police officers said a man found dead in the 300 block of East Las Vegas Street in the city Friday evening shot and killed his wife and also shot his son before turning the gun on himself.
Officers responded to the area around 5:04 p.m. and found a man dead on a sidewalk outside the home, a woman dead inside and a man who had been shot but was still alive.
The El Paso County Coroner's Office completed autopsies on the man and woman who died, ruling the woman's death a homicide and the man's death a suicide, both from gunshot wounds.

Colorado Springs Police have identified the couple as 44 year old Pamela Sevey and her husband, 48 year old Aaron Sevey. Police reports show Aaron died of multiple gunshot wounds. It appears Pamela Sevey was the one who pulled the trigger and then shot herself.

A look at past court documents show the couple had numerous filings including restraining orders against each other, accusations of sexual assault and violence, and divorce filings that were later dropped.
Pam Sevey's Facebook page could leave some insight into her mind set leading up to the shooting. About 30 minutes before she and Aaron were found dead, a post says that she had found her husband in bed with another woman.
This is the first homicide in Colorado Springs for 2011.

County Coroner's Office has not determined the cause of death, but the garage was full of fumes and there was no physical trauma, leading officers to suspect carbon-monoxide poisoning, police said.

Lafayette police Cmdr. Gene McCausey told reporters Thursday morning that investigators' “first assumption” is that the deaths were the result of suicide. When asked whether that would qualify as a murder-suicide, McCausey said such a determination ultimately would be made by the Coroner's Office.

Authorities haven't released identities, either, but people who knew the victims identified them as Patrice Clark and her daughter, Nicole, who is either 9 or 10 years old.

Later Thursday, McCausey said investigators have much more work to do before they can determine what happened in the garage.

“Whether this was deliberate or accidental, that is what detectives are struggling with,” he said.

he Boulder County Coroner's Office has identified the father and toddler who were found dead in a Longmont house Sunday night. David M. Heydenburg, 38, and Allyson Heydenburg, 3, were found by police in the 1200 block of Red Mountain Drive.

The exact cause of their deaths is not being released at this time, pending further investigation. A lengthy suicide note was found.
